Zapped!

It's a family tradition to have a new board game for use over Christmas, so when Littlewoods asked if I would review Monopoly Zapped, one of the wide selection of games available in their online catalogues, I was more than happy to agree.

We have all played Monopoly, but this is the 21st century version. You will need an iPod/iPhone/iPad and to download the free accompanying app.

The game follows the usual premise of acquiring property etc, but instead of money you have debit style cards which you update by tapping them onto the iPad. I have to say this can be a bit fiddly and took a bit of getting used to, but there is a knack and we soon found it more straightforward.

You use the app for all dealings with the bank, and to buy/sell property. But it gets most interesting when it comes to chance/community chest and getting out of jail. These take on a new role as they often involve a mini-game in which players compete in order to claim the money/pay the fees/escape your cell!

We initially had the odd teething problem with the cards and finding our way round the game play- but it's all explained in the clear instructions and once we got the hang of it we had a really good afternoon. In usual Monopoly fashion it can take a while, and other commitments meant we had to stop after an hour and a bit - and that was before anyone had bankrupted themselves! You can of course work out the winner, but to avoid bickering I called it a draw!

I think we will definitely play this regularly on grotty Sunday afternoons. I am old and therefore had no complaints about the original version, but from my kids point of view the added bonus of using the iPad and its innovative new game play options definitely makes this version of the game more appealing! A good way to tempt board game resistant teens and tweens back to the family table!

The kids said-

We give it 4/5 - We really enjoyed it and it was a really good game. We are only deducting a point because sometimes the app is a bit glitchy.

So overall we would recommend it as good family fun this Christmas,

Disclosure:- we were given a free game for the purposes of the review, but all words and opinion are our own.

  1. I find computerised monopoly games good because they help younger children a bit by adding/deducting their money whilst they learn game play. Being lazy it also lets me off constantly having to count their 'piles' too! xx
