Lego has often topped best toy polls. Having 3 kids means I have a large selection at home, and it is a great creative toy. I have particular fondness for the baby of the Lego family – Duplo. My 9 year old was given a big tub for his first birthday, and it is still being regularly used now. It’s chunkiness is particularly suitable for small hands, but it retains its versatility for imaginative play even into older childhood, so when offered a chance to play test the new Duplo number train with Syd, we were delighted to agree.
Syd was excited as soon as he saw the box. He has played with his brothers blocks before, but this is the first Duplo of his very own. We quickly assembled the engine, no need for complex instructions here, and got down to the business having a good play.
As with all Duplo, the set is beautifully bright and cheerful. Syd is currently learning his colours so we spent some time practicing those. He is starting to recognise numbers too, tho he currently calls them all one or two, but this set is going to really help him learn to identify his digits up to ten. I really liked the additional educational aspect of this set. Kids learn best through play at this age, and I feel just drawing attention to the numbers and colours while we build is really helping Syd gain familiarity with them.
He also enjoyed free play with the set. A big fan of animals at the moment the dog figure was on the receiving end of lots of kisses! And he built some super towers. And of course knocked them down again. He has also invented a game of his own where he ‘counts’ everything out of the box, and then does the same back into the box again! Very tidy, I have no idea where he gets that from, because it is certainly not from me!
Syd is really enjoying the Duplo number train, at 19 months he is slightly under the recommended age range, but has no trouble at all using the toy with confidence, and has fun adding his own train sound effects as he trundles the train round the room! Choo-Choo! A great toy for under 5s, perfect for fun, as well as for developing number and colour recognition skills. And all children (and grown-ups) seem to love a train!
