Back to School Rhymes

This post is a little bit of a cheat, because I have posted these two poems before, last summer when I wrote them. I am combining them here, partly because it is that time of year again, and also because my children are running me totally ragged this summer, leaving no energy to compose something new. I hope to be firing on a few more bloggy cylinders once they go back tommorrow, so bear with me!!

Back To School Rhymes

The first concerns the sheer joy of back to school shopping….

Back to School Rhyme (Or Why I Am Skint!)

Haircuts and New Shoes.

Fresh Shirts and too long trews.

The P.E. kit has got too small,

Why did you have to get so tall?

Lunch box has a mouldy stink.

Last years pens are out of ink.

Where did all the rulers go?

That’s a thing I’d like to know.

Back to shops to get more things,

Before the new term school bell rings.

Protractors, calculators-all the tools,

Big list of stuff you need for schools.

Hockey socks, and winter coats,

Football boots and books for notes,

Every year there’s more and more

No wonder I’m so blinkin’ poor.

~

The second takes a more nostalgic look at the end of the holidays…

Holiday End Blues

You drive me mad with endless need,

Another drink, another feed,

Another game, a naughty deed,

But I’ll miss you when you’re back at school.

The cupboards are completely bare,

Like locusts have been eating there,

I filled them yesterday I swear,

But I’ll miss you when you’re back at school.

I am absolutely skint,

These days out seem to cost a mint,

Now all that’s in my purse is lint,

But I’ll miss you when you’re back at school.

I need a rest, I’m all done in,

And I’m almost out of gin,

I can’t keep up, I’m a has-been,

But I’ll miss you when you’re back at school.

Hanging out with you is fun,

Even when there’s not much sun,

I’m sad the holidays are done,

I’ll miss you when you’re back at school.

~

And it is quite true, I will miss them when they are back at school. I hope you have all had a wonderful time with your kids, and good luck if you haven’t been to Clarks yet….

Love Miss Cisco XXX

They are great and really sum up the mood. Mind we were talking yesterday and by the time all the clubs are paid for actually being off school is pretty cheap.

I seem to be skint whatever the time of year- its either holiday treats or school trips or new shoes! Still, they repay me in many ways!

Ah love these – I’ve been listening to The White Stripes singing I can tell that we are gonna be friends in the car all week – feeling very emo!

We haven’t been to Clarks, we haven’t even had a tot up of uniforms. I’m tremendously bad at organising over the Summer holidays.
My lot drive me bats all Summer and the house is such a state it can take no more, but I really miss them once they aren’t here all day 🙂

I LOVE these, so very very true. Completely empathised with the mouldy stink in the lunch box – I do that every holiday and never learn! The bitter sweet feeling of them going back to school is completely summed up in your second poem. That reminds me – I’d better check Grace is all ready for next week! Hope you will come over to Prose for Thought on Thursday and link them up 🙂
