Moving

We want to move house, to somewhere with a garden, and a little bit more of a family feel. I love our flat, but it has no outside space, no parking and is on a main road next to a nightclub. Toddler friendly it is not! Of course when we moved in here, very young children were not part of the plan, but plans change and now we need a new home to reflect that.

I only started looking properly this week and already I am feeling stressed. I veer between excitement and panic. Excitement at a fresh start in a new home, a chance to declutter and lay down some new ground rules and all that stuff. And panic at the idea of moving all our many belongings, making big decisions and even finding somewhere we like.

My dream home would be detached, old-fashioned and rambling. Subtle faded colours, punctuated by our own more vibrant art. It would have a cellar – for raucousness, a huge kitchen, with room for a distressed wooden table and chairs. A nook with an open fire guarded by high-backed wing armchairs and bookended by ceiling height shelves, packed with novels and biographies. A family room of squishy sofa-ed cosiness and primary coloured fun. An adult lounge for writing, music and box set watching without the threat of lego infiltration. A bedroom for each of us and a spare for visitors. A roll top bath, a rainforest shower. A grand staircase for fake movie star entrances. A garden with the smell of honeysuckle and a plethora of wooden hideaways for all age groups – preferably one high in an old and charming tree that may bear fruit in late summer. Borders where petunias battle with gaudy plastic flamingos for attention.

What I will settle for is somewhere with room enough. Room enough for five people to dwell without sitting on each others laps. Three bedrooms will suffice, we can share with the youngest a while longer yet, and the eldest is set to fly to the hallowed halls of residence within a couple of years. A kitchen that functions. Heating that works. Magnolia walls peeking out between our treasures. Even a small courtyard outside would provide a space for messy fun.

Dreams aside, I am not that fussy, my purse doesn’t allow for pernickitiness. I have only been to look at one house and I loved it. But that is fraught with it’s own stresses, it is not up to us whether we can have it. They let everyone interested view, and then pass the details of the people who want it onto the landlord to choose from.

I am now trying to put it out of my mind until we get news, but am actually browsing furniture shops and mentally planning where I would put things. The former is by far the better approach as the latter is just going to make it even more depressing when we get the inevitable phone call saying it has gone to someone with a higher income. I want to send the landlord a missive with pictures of my smiling children and a promise to fill her house with love instead of just personality-free figures on a sheet of A4.

So you will have to excuse me if my blogging is a little erratic over the next few weeks while we find ourselves a new roof, expect tantrums when I don’t get what I want and an uncharacteristic series of interior (un-)design posts when we do finally find somewhere, for now – it’s back to loitering on the Rightmove website in case anything new pops up!

Wish me luck,

Love Miss Cisco XXX

Good luck! I’m totally with you on the honeysuckle front! I love the stuff. Evokes such childhood memories for me. I too “move myself” into houses before we’ve actually got them – planning every room! And honestly – I would TOTALLY send something to the landlord. If it was me, I’d love the thought of a happy family moving into my home. DO IT! You’ll be gutted if you discover someone else did 😉 x

Good luck!!! Take each stage at a time with moving. And shout. I help people do this everyday. SO I know how stressful it can be.

    And how much fun!

Your fantasy house sounds amazing. Hope you find somewhere lovely to live. I am still getting my head round the concept of a lego free room….

I know, wouldn’t it be amazing, dreams are made of Lego free rooms….

Oh good luck! I feel for you. We too dreamed of moving into a bigger house, but our dreams got squashed when our house sale suddenly went pfft right before our eyes. So now we’re thinking of our next move, whether to somehow renovate our house to make it bigger (if that’s even possible)… For now, we are licking our wounds clean. Hope things run smoothly for you guys.

It’s horrible when you miss out on the one you want isn’t it! We did a year ago, and took me ages to even bother to look again! Good luck to you too. X

I read through your original wish-list and thought: ‘blimey, this girl doesn’t want much?’ then I read your slightly more realistic list and thought ‘that’s nice’. Wishing you loads of luck and very much hope you find want you want/need. x

This is the hardest part of buying a house I think. Seeing somewhere and falling in love with it and there being nothing you can do about it.

I still mourn houses we didn’t get.

Something perfect will turn up though and it will all fit into place. x

Good Luck! My house is semi detached old and rambling and for a bit the description sounded familiar. Except we never quite found the money to do the things we dreamt of, so it is very, very rambling. I spend all my time dreaming about brand new houses, or houses that don’t need anything doing to them. I like the sound of the adult lounge a lot…the kids just follow us wherever we go, bringing Lego with them aghhhh!

Oh how exciting. Best of luck. My advice is get a house you can get to the back garden without going through the house! It’s a nightmare and I now have bikes in the living room lol.

I am hoping that this house move is stress free and you get exactly what you wish for. My best friend moves house tomorrow actually. It’s been so long in the making, but the house is just perfect for her and her family, It will happen, and you will be sitting in your adult living room writing soon I bet 🙂

Good luck lovely! Moving is always an equal dose of excitement and stress, but it’ll be so worthwhile when you find your place. Trust your instincts and I’m sure the right house is right there waiting for you 🙂 xx

Good luck! I’ll be keeping everything crossed for you. So what if others have a higher income, as long as you can pay the rent every month, you’re just as good as them! I’d let you have it!

We moved from a home I had gutted and built back up to completely suit my tastes, to a magnolia landlord shaped box. We were lucky to get it and quickly I came to appreciate it’s not a tenants market. A landlord can pick and choose. All my expectations had to be adjusted.
A year on and we want to buy again and again I had expectations, hopes, dreams and then I went to the estate agents and the crash of reality.
I’m buying more lottery tickets and drinking more gin. Care to join me?

Good luck:) A rather stressful time, have to admit to having a fire place on my list 🙂 -Our current home has no fire place! I was determined to try and think out of my limited box, view houses other than victorian terraces, in different areas – we live in a 1930’s bungalow with enormous garden, in an area I would never have considered and I love it!!

I really hope you find somewhere that you love and is within your budget soon! We were selling ours until very recently… it all became a bit much after three years with our house on the market! Thankfully things fell into place so we didn’t have to sell after all!

I can’t believe I’m going to say this because it annoyed me whenever people said it to me, but it will work out. It took us a year and two false starts before we moved (the third time almost collapsed the week of the move).

My advice is to write a list of what you want in the your house and mark the non-negotiables and priorities of the nice to haves. Plus start to prepare for the move by sorting through your belongings and getting rid of as much as you can. Not only will it make your current place feel nicer, but will make moving easier.

    Good luck
