The lovely and gorgeous Mari at Mari’s World has tagged me to answer the following questions about what I am doing right now. Obviously what I am doing at this exact moment is sitting at the computer tapping out this very blog post, but that would be a short and not especially sweet answer, so here is the fuller version.
Currently I Am: Preparing to turn 41 tomorrow. 41 sounds older than 40, mostly because it actually is. I guess it is properly in my 40s as opposed to just dipping a toe in. Well, I am ready for it, if you read my post earlier in the week you will know I am all about the positive at the moment. Miss Fierce is in the house, and she isn’t going anywhere. Well, except to Exeter for a night of child free time with my other half at the weekend….which reminds me, I must pack!
Reading: I am having a reading spell, I am gorging on other people’s words, cramming them all into my brainbox and enjoying every syllable. I have read something like 50 books this year, and this week I read two of the very best. How To Build A Girl by Caitlin Moran was extraordinary, I relate so strongly to the main character, and the complexities of her world reflect much of what went on in my head and life as a teenager too – I was in a band rather than writing about them, but armed with my own pseudonym I took on the world in a similar way, with the same insecurities behind the bolshie exterior. And The Judas Scar by Amanda Jennings was simply un-put-downable, I was gripped from the first page and annoyed everyone I share a house with by refusing to remove my nose from it until it had reached it’s thrilling conclusion – if my kids have complaints about the lack of care over those two days, I suggest they direct them at Amanda – she shouldn’t have written such a fine book if she wanted my kids to get dinner.
Listening to: Exciting times in the Cisco household mean I have mostly been listening to my other half’s band, Self Abuse. An american label has recently re-issued an album of theirs from the early 80s on vinyl. And as well as that they have recorded a new EP ready for their forthcoming appearance at the mother of all punk festivals, Rebellion, this coming August. I have band envy, I am missing playing these days, and must find a way to get back to it again soon.
Laughing At: *stands up and clears throat* I AM A RADIO 4 COMEDY ADDICT. I especially love The News Quiz and The Infinite Monkey Cage. And in terms of telly, I never tire of QI. Clever funny is what I like. Oh and political comedy – have just booked tickets to see Mark Steele later in the year, and would love to go see Stewart Lee too. And not forgetting the surreal, I am looking forward to giggling my way through Milton Jones at Camp Bestival in a few weeks!
Swooning Over: I inherited a bit of money when my Granddad died last year, and have recently made the decision that I want to buy a piece of Art with some of it, something beautiful and solid to remember him by. The artist making me swoon at the moment is Yvonne Coomber, just beautiful and dreamy. I am going to try and see some in the real world at the weekend to check out if it has the same effect in real life as on the screen.
Planning: On moving house. Still hunting, no joy yet, but it still very much the plan to get me a garden. And birthdays – my eldest turns 18 in a few weeks, and my youngest turns three 3 days after that. Spa days and family meals, cakes and gifts, balloons and days out – all still to be organised!
Eating Lots Of: Well, not eating lots of anything, am on yet another stupid diet! I set myself a target in March of losing 21lbs by my birthday. As aforementioned, that birthday is tomorrow – and I have not reached my target – I have however lost 18lbs, which is still pretty awesome, and shall be rewarded with much cake this weekend.
Feeling: Better. I have been feeling a little down and a little small lately, but I have taken those feelings by their ears and slung them firmly out the door and am adopting a more positive outlook.
Discovering: Old things through new eyes as I follow my toddler around his world.
Looking At: This month I have been mostly looking at grass. Grass with 22 men running about on it. Yes. I like football, England games aside I have thoroughly enjoyed the endless matches, although their have been times where I have lost total track of who I am watching.
Wearing: Am experimenting. Was feeling mumsy but am trying to find a new look that is my old look but new. I used to wear a lot of original 1950s frocks. I used to wear a green polka dot ra-ra skirt with fish nets, I used to wear Mum clothes from White Stuff – what I want to do is combine all those things in a new, uniquely me in my forties look that reflects who I am, which is a scruffy herbert with delusions of grandeur.
Cooking: Bores me. Actually, that isn’t true, I like cooking cooking, what I am bored of is the daily grind of what to feed a family of awkward buggers for tea. You can often find me looking panic stricken in a Waitrose aisle while trying to remember who eats what and when we last had bolognaise, as if it was yesterday I probably can’t serve it again.
Wondering: Why pint doesn’t rhyme with mint or hint. And if that is the case have I been mis-pronouncing Harold Pinter all these years.
Trying Out: New hair, I have gone back to being really rather red after a few years of a more beige bland thing. I am surprising myself when I catch a glimpse of vibrant colour when wandering past a mirror, but I am rather liking it.
