Do you have life insurance? I have to admit I don’t, partly because I am disorganised and partly because as a stay-at-home Mum with little income to speak of I kind of thought I didn’t need it. Then I read an article in The Independent discussing a recent study that showed if being a Mum was a paid job it would come with a salary of £100,000 a year.

I definitely don’t appear to be earning that, but it does make you think about how expensive I would be to replace. (aww shucks, you are right, I am irreplaceable!). Now you know me, I don’t shy away from being morbid, you can even find a post on this blog about my funeral plans, but when it comes to practicalities I am terrible. I know it would be a devastating blow to the family if something happened to me or my other half, but some of that blow could be cushioned if the practical stuff was covered.
Having children should have been the sort of event that triggered me sorting something as important as this out – their future is so important to me, yet by not having life insurance in place I am risking them ending up in a precarious situation should the worst happen.
Aviva have years of experience which makes them a valuable source of knowledge for all sorts of life insurance. They have produced a couple of videos looking at milestone moments in life, those time when you are at the start of an exciting journey, but may overlook the importance of having cover in place if tragedy does strike. This video looks at ‘starting out’ together as a couple and taking those first steps on the journey of a lifetime together.
Such an exciting time, as is the subject of their other video ‘Having A Baby’. When caught up in the happy whirlwind it can be easy to push life insurance to the back of your minds – death is an uncomfortable subject, and when money is tight it can feel like an unwanted extra expense. For me it is just my fundamental fear of forms and paperwork that put me off, but writing this article is reminding me of just how important it is to have a safety net for my family if the worst did happen.
Do you have life insurance? Or are you a bit like me, putting it off because you don’t quite understand it or struggle to afford it? If you feel you are one of those people, lacking in understanding of life protection, Aviva want to hear from you. They want to know which moments in your life stand out in their competition #milestonemoments which you can find running on their Facebook page until 23.59 on the 9th of November – you could be in with a chance to win £250 of high street vouchers – perfect in the run up to Christmas!
For me the obvious milestones are the births of my children, where would I be without them, or vice versa,
