‘Is there any pudding Mum?’
‘There are yoghurts or help yourself to something from the snack cupboard.’ I reply.
I am a bit rubbish at providing proper puddings. When I was a kid we always had puddings. Dinner was stuff like chops or liver and onions (in my pre-veggie days) or slightly charcoaled findus pancakes post 11 when I had decided to spurn meat. There was always pudding. Swiss roll, tinned peaches, apple crumbles on Sunday, and my favourite as a kid – Angel Delight.
Butterscotch was my personal favourite, or maybe strawberry. My Mum always made it in a big white plastic mixing bowl from which individual portions would be dolloped into bowls. If you were lucky some would remain in the larger bowl for pilfering from the fridge later.
I had forgotten all about Angel Delight until offered some of the new Bubblegum flavour to try. It is nostalgia in a bowl, combining the creamy texture I remember so well will the flavour of hubba bubba – a much loved treat as a child. I had to buy some butterscotch too, and it was just as tasty as ever, sparking memories of brownies and leg warmers and disco dance classes.
You can make milkshake with it too – something my kids are big fans of. It lasts for ages in its packet in the cupboard, and is quick to make. I have even seen recipes for making biscuits from it. And it is so pretty when served in a nice glass bowl….
For me it’s a big taste of nostalgia, and now I have remembered it I will be keeping some in the cupboard for those ‘What’s for pudding?’ moments. But while we are on nostalgia, I can’t resist including this…
For while I was going to disco dance classes, and eating Angel Delight for pudding, I was also dreaming of being Molly Ringwald!
