Snapping Pretty

Betsy is rediscovering her love of photography. She did an AS level in it, which she enjoyed to an extent, especially the ability to develop her own films, but felt some of the joy was removed by being constrained by her teachers ideas rather than able to be free to use her own.

She would love to go back to using film, but it is quite pricey to develop when you can’t do it yourself, and her own digital camera is having a funny five minutes, so she is reduced to using my own digital – which is frankly only a smidge above a cheap point and shoot. It is still giving her practice for what makes a good shot and she is enjoying getting out and about taking snaps. The downside is she is using my camera… I end up taking pics on my phone or not at all!

The following snaps are all hers taken at the new Molly’s Den warehouse in Bridport. It is one of our new favourite places as it combines all sorts of vintage bits and bobs to rifle through with a café selling good cake and a decent sized kids area full of bricks and puzzles to keep Syd happy.

Of course we are all banned from buying anything at the moment, an imminent house move means the last thing we need is more stuff, but we can photograph it for posterity and future home inspiration. So here are the highlights of all the pretty….

For Christmas we bought her an instax camera, which is lovely- but expensive – for taking instant pics with. She loves it, but is very precious about the film (not surprisingly when its about 60p a photo!). There is something about a Polaroid type snap that is quite beautiful, and am loving the photographs she takes with it.

I have to say that visiting other people’s blogs with their stunning photography makes me want to improve my own too, am thinking of getting a better camera and teaching myself a bit more about framing shots and using props when Syd starts school in September. A picture speaks a thousand words they say, well as a writer I like to use the thousand words as well….but a pretty picture is always lovely too!

I like digital too – mostly as I am a bit crap at photography but lovely filters and a bit of cropping can rescue most of my pics a bit!

The camera is pretty reasonable at around £80, it’s the ongoing film costs that make it pricier- but then that just makes you plan the perfect picture a bit more!

Your daughters pictures are lovely, I also love those Instax cameras but I can understand why she doesn’t use it much at 60p an image.

Photography is such a great hobby isn’t it. I have a polaroid which I really like but it is expensive to replace the film so I don’t use it often! I am really enjoying taking more photos since treating myself to a DSLR after Christmas!

Lovely photos and I like the look of the Instax camera! Like you, I’d like to take better pictures (although my pics of people aren’t bad, I just don’t use them on the blog!), but a thousand words is always good to me! 🙂

Sometimes a well framed picture can be much more powerful than a 1000s words… I am working on improving my photography but it is going slowly…

Loving all these pretty photos your daughter has clicked. I am so with you on the photography front. Just plain lazy to lug the SLR around, I remain content clicking with my phone. All that is set to change, come start of the school year 🙂
