Yesterday we started the day quietly. A bit of telly, a bit of lego. We had plans to head out for the afternoon so eased into the day slowly. By half past eleven we were out in the garden having an early picnic. Stretched out in the sunshine on a blanket, we nibbled crackers and cheese and onion rolls and admired the flowers that were springing up all around us. A quick game of football then it was time to head out to catch a train to Bournemouth.
On arrival we found that an early lunch had left us feeling peckish again, so we headed for Sprinkles Gelato. Syd had strawberry ice cream complete with chocolate flake and chocolate sprinkles. Betsy and I got barely half-way through waffles as big as our heads, loaded with delicious goodies.
Then we strolled down to the beach. We built sand castles, and paddled in the sea. We ran, we jumped waves, we whooped, some of us ate sand….
Following our beach stint we visited the Oceanarium. We saw rays and sharks, turtles and otters, a plethora of Nemo’s, crocodiles, crabs and all manner of sea creatures.
With our under the sea visit complete, there was time for a play in the new fountains – jumping on buttons to make the water shoot higher. More running, more whopping, more hilarity. Another pair of dry pants. (For Syd….obvs!). A stroll through the pleasure gardens, seeing giant balloons and the trickle of the Bourne Stream.
Then to 60 Million Postcards for a slap up dinner of macaroni cheese, sweet potato fries, tempura veg – all delicious and all gone. An uphill walk to the train station, another train ride complete with word games and I spy – and finally home at the almost bedtime time of eight PM.
I took Syd to bed, but he couldn’t get to sleep. I assumed it was as we had had too much excitement and a slightly late bedtime. But no. Apparently he couldn’t sleep because he had had such a boring day. ‘But we had a picnic, 2 train rides, went to see the fish, played on the beach, had ice cream, jumped in fountains, and went out for dinner?!’ ‘Yes, it was a bit boring.’. Honestly…..

I’ve only recently heard about Sprinkles Gelato. We have one about 20 minutes away in Portsmouth and a friend of mine keeps posting about it on Facebook. Having seen your ice-cream, I am definitely adding it to the “todo” list for the summer holidays – yum!

Sometimes you think you’ve done it all and apparently you haven’t. Other times you do next to nothing and it’s the best ever. Can’t win.

You mean mummy! Imagine only going to the beach and on a train and to see the fish and having ice cream and going out for your tea. You really must make more effort to entertain him in future!

Syd’s comment is a nod to your epic parenting. If he thinks a day like that is dull, he must lead a pretty exciting life!
