As regular readers will know, we moved house in March. I have written previously about how lovely my kitchen in the new house is, but you may also remember I had commented on the lack of storage space in it. When Wren read about my kitchen storage problems, we decided to get together and explore some storage solutions.
As things stand, other than the under the sink cupboard which is full of cleaning bits and bobs, there are just two cupboards for crockery and food. If we were to fit a new kitchen, I could choose to expand into the dining area – but I love having room for a proper dining table, so would be really loathe to give up that space. What I really want is ideas to make the most of the space we have.
I adore the current kitchen – the arches reflect the same design on the antique dresser on the other side of the room – but I would love to add some wall cupboards. The Wren Country Sage kitchen (pictured above) would fit nicely with the existing colour scheme and the style would compliment the current vintage feel. Sadly we rent, so the prospect of a whole new kitchen might be nice, but would be too much of an investment for us – adding a couple of wall cupboards may be do-able however.
I am really coveting some of the built-in storage solutions offered by Wren. One of my bug bears at the moment is recycling – I am a big greenie, so I know how important it is – but in a small kitchen I resent the space taken up by the required bins – not to mention the ugliness. I would love to have something like this to solve the problem.
Wren also have all manner of nifty sliding larders and drawer inserts that can create space where there was little before. But there are also some tips I have learnt since living here that are cheap stop-gaps until you can afford a new kitchen! One way of utilising wall space is to use a plate rack. If you are like me and have a collection of pretty vintage crockery, this has the added bonus of acting as a beautiful display. Other options would be metal hooks for kitchen implements and pans, or even a magnetic strip for your metallic odds and sods.
You can make you cupboard spaces work better for you by using clever inserts to make the space more functional. You can buy tiered shelf inserts, which you pop to the back of a deep cupboard allowing you to be able to easily find the tins and jars that would otherwise be lurking out of sight – which would beat my current method of emptying the cupboard searching for the kidney beans I know are at the back there somewhere! You can get similar products for stacking plates in a space saving fashion, I need to buy some of these, as my current leaning tower of crockery has already led to a couple of breakages. I have also seen some great DIY approaches for attaching wire racks to the back of cupboard doors to store packet mixes etc. The key is to utilise space as best you can, so that little is wasted.
If like me you have a separate dining space, are there less regularly used kitchen items you could store there? I am lucky enough to have a large dresser in mine – and the cupboards at the bottom are perfect for housing my large collection of baking equipment. I have lots of tins, trays, cookie cutters, as well as blenders and electric whisks, which I wouldn’t be without, but aren’t the sort of items that I need to have close at hand while cooking a family dinner. Having them stored elsewhere is a practical way to ensure my kitchen cupboards aren’t overloaded with items that don’t get used daily.
And finally, use your work surfaces well to create more storage. A glance at the picture of my kitchen will show you I have a mug tree and knife block on top of my counter top microwave. This means I have regularly used items close to hand, and they aren’t taking up any extra worktop space. I also have pretty jars with my pasta in them – these are the Orla Keily coffee jars – and as I am a coffee addict I class them as being free. They look pretty, and mean I am not storing bulky pasta packets in an already overcrowded food cupboard.
