Anya from Older Single Mum is hosting Kate Take 5‘s Listography this week, and it is all about those shameful things we enjoy but hide. I am not a big believer in guilt, if you are going to do it, you may as well not ruin the moment by worrying about it, but I guess the point of guilty pleasures is perhaps you keep it on the down low, rather than ruining the serene cool persona that the world knows you for (Ha!). Which is why I am sharing mine here…..doh…..
1) The secret shelf of cupboardy joy.
The top left hand shelf of the right hand cupboard on my kitchen wall is where I hide my treats from the kids. Sliding them towards the back, so that no hint of wrapper is peeking over the edge where it could be spotted by small peoples eyes. Unfortunately my eldest is now taller than me, and knows the shelf is there, and occasionally risks my wrath by pinching chocolate from it, but it is still safe from the other two.
2) Holby City.
I don’t really do soaps, or reality TV or Downton (which is just a posh soap innit?). I sometimes catch two minutes of Eastenders, and spend that time going ‘Who is that?’ ‘Why is she married to him now?’ interspersed with plaintive cries of ‘What is going on? Where is Dirty Den?’. For some reason the show that sneaks through my generally snobby TV viewing choices is Holby. I find it comforting, despite it being full of sick people.
|I call it Hobbly City, and refer to Casualty as Casually. It’s laugh a minute in my house!|
I firmly believe there are very few foods that are not improved by putting them in the middle of buttered bread. I like mashed potato sandwiches, bolognese sandwiches, chocolate sandwiches, onion bhaji sandwiches…….Yum.
4) Country Music
Yup. I like a bit of country. Not Billy Ray Cyrus era, but Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton. I like traditional bluegrass, and some good old English folk music too. Not very punk rock….
|or is it?!|
I like stuff, the tackier the better. I have Elvis dolls, Green Day dolls, Doctor Who toys, I even have a St Peters snowglobe. I like collectible toys, and nasty crockery, and 1950’s barware. I like hula dolls, and glittery flamingos. I like disco balls and I have Halloween decorations that are up all year. I have classy taste in interior design.
