I just voted and for the first time I was accompanied by one of my offspring. Yeah, I know, I totes don’t look old enough to have an adult child right?!
I am proud to say she was thrilled to have her say for the first time. She may be less so when the results come out, but disillusionment with the voting system is another rite of passage innit. Up there with first steps and all that.
What I love is she is excited by the whole experience. That for the first time she gets to be involved, have her say, be part of the process. And her excitement rubbed off on me a bit – I was a little neater with my ‘x’ than usual, tried to imbue my pencil strokes with authority.
Remember being a teen? When we thought we could change the world and make a difference? Before getting older and thinking we couldn’t change anything….well that is a bloody sad state of affairs. Let’s all get back our belief that we can change the world for the better!!
Having the right to vote is an AWESOME thing. Yeah there is every chance I won’t get the government of my dreams (for a start Batman wasn’t even on the ballot paper), but being able to at least have a say is something we take for granted when so many around the world don’t have that chance. And then once whoever is in charge is inside Number 10, let’s make sure they know we ain’t taking no shit this time – we want things to be better for us, our kids, for the world – and we will be there shouting in their ears until they do the right thing.
So get voting today, mark your cross with pride and know that we can make a difference.
