Top tips for hosting the perfect Mexican night

So, you want to spice up your weekend with a fun themed Mexican party? Perhaps you have the night off and want to have some friends over but don’t know how to make it a night to remember. Well here are some great ways of turning a bag of potato wedges and a little ingenuity into a full on fiesta.

The chips and dips

First thing’s first for any party – the finger food. You want to give your amigos a taste sensation that they aren’t going to forget in a hurry. With these top food tips you’ll have them talking about your buffet for days.

Which chips to choose

The fries or wedges you decide to serve can make all the difference to your party. You can go for the plain or salted kind and decorate yourself with Mexican style herbs and spices, or opt for the easy option and cook up some Mexican Style Wedges straight from the bag.

Make your own dips

Second on the list is what you’re going to dunk your wedges into – the dips! Guacamole, salsa and sour cream are all favourites in Mexico, and it’s easy to put a unique spin on these classics yourself by adding in some fresh garlic or onions. You can even turn the mixing routine into a fun activity with the kids, as they adapt the recipe to their very own tomato paste or creamy sauce.

If you want it fresh, one fantastically simple recipe for guacamole is blended avocado, lime juice, onions, chillies and garlic. From this base you can then start to change it up a bit. Turn up the heat with paprika and cayenne pepper, or make it into a chunky dip by adding finely chopped tomatoes and spring onion. Your guests will be impressed, and you’ll have this easy recipe in your skill set forever.

Your famous nacho wedges

Combine two classics by sprinkling grated cheese over your wedges and covering with salsa. Then just zap in the microwave for forty seconds and serve piping hot to your guests. Throwing some jalapeno chillies into the mix will give them a real kick. Just make sure you have enough as these go down a storm, especially with little ones who can handle the spice.

The outfits and decoration

You should never turn down an opportunity to dress up, and hosting a Mexican party is great way to show your guests your interior decoration skills. Here are some pointers on how you can make the whole affair look authentic with ease.

Sombreros, sombreros, sombreros

Amazon have loads of budget dress-up props, including the all-important sombrero. Order in bulk in time for your party so your guests can pop them on while they enjoy the Mexican feast, or stick them on the table and fill them with nachos as unique and amusing bowls.

Looking sharp with cacti

You can get small cacti very cheaply from most garden-centres, and they make the perfect decoration for a Mexican themed night. Dot them around windowsills, mantelpieces and bookshelves so give the room a real Mexican-style dessert vibe. That’s an easy way to turn up the heat at the party, but keep out of reach of little hands.

And there you have it, all the ingredients for the perfect Mexican night!
