Easy Space Themed Hats for Camp Bestival

Wow, Camp Bestival is flying up at us fast! All this going back to work nonsense means all of a sudden it is almost upon us and I haven’t done much in the way of getting ready yet! Luckily Pitch Village are taking care of our camping needs this year, so I can focus on the fun stuff, like fancy dress!

Camp Bestival always have amazing themes, and this year they are heading out of this world with their SPACE theme – love a bit of space geekery me, so am really looking forward to seeing all the astronomical awesomeness. Lots of people go all out on their fancy dress – we tend to be a little more laid back about it, just adding the odd touch of home-made bobbity to our usual festival comfy clothes. Today is the first day of the school holidays, so we have celebrated by crafting some very, VERY simple Space themed hats. I am hopeless at craft, so if I can manage this, so can anyone!

We made simple bands to fit our heads, and then using polystyrene balls, cardboard and pipe cleaners we added embellishments to create an alien head dress and a Earth, Sun and Moon one. Syd even had a go at making one all by himself – and he did really well!

Our alien hat is based round a simple head band – simply cut a strip of cardboard, measure to size, and stick together with sticky tape. The eyes are polystyrene balls, with stickers for eyeballs, and cardboard eyelashes attached with more tape. Attaching them to the pipe cleaners was easy, as you can just poke the pipe cleaner into the polystyrene, and then tape the pipe cleaner to the inside of the cardboard band, add some colourful spot stickers and job done!

This Sun, Moon and Earth head-dress was just as easy – again based round a simple cardboard loop. I have tried painting polystyrene balls before, with terrible results – hours to dry and then the paint all peeled off – so this time we used felt tips – quick and easy! (Just don’t look too closely at the geography of the earth – seriously inaccurate!!). Again we stuck pipe cleaners into the bottom of the balls, then taped them to the headband. Simples!

Syd's alien hat

And aside from a little bit of help with the tape, Syd made his all by himself – although he says he in an Angler Fish, which isn’t especially space themed now is it?! There is no telling my four-year old to stick to a topic though – free-spirited is one word, stubborn is another. So he is a Space Angler Fish. Good enough for our gang!!

I am really pleased with how well these have turned out!! Are you heading to Camp Bestival this year? The last few day tickets are whizzing out fast, so if you fancy it get in quick!

Love this. Trying to persuade Mr LMR to take the monkeys to a festival. I’ll keep trying because it looks amazing fun.
