Oh You Pretty Things – Small Things

Morning! It is my turn to host Oh You Pretty Things, and I have chosen the theme ‘small’. What are the little things you keep and love?

My very favourite small things are these shoes.

first shoes

They were Betsy’s first ever pair, and while I do also have my boy’s first shoes too, their utilitarian Clarks-ness cannot match the cute design of these.

shoes then and now

Look at the size of her current shoes ย by comparison. My tiny little girl who took her first tottery steps in these little fish adorned shoes is now 18 and taller than me. I still love her just as much as I did then, more even, but how I would love just 5 minutes back with her as little more than a baby – it is so long ago the memories feel barely mine anymore.

elvis matchbox

I also love this matchbox that has been Elvis’d right up. I am not even sure where we gained this from, but it sits happily on one of the shelves in our lounge and cheers me up when I spot it’s glitteriness. I love matchboxes – did you ever do that challenge when you were small? You know, the one where you had to fit as many different objects as possible inside a single matchbox – a paperclip, a grain of sand, and all manner of tiny things – the winner being the one with the most crammed inside their little box.

I have been perusing Matchbox Art of late too, after my friend (and designer of my blog header) co-ran an exhibition of the same a couple of years back. I would love to start collecting some – small enough not to take over the house, pretty enough to want to treasure.

buttons rockabilly

When I was a small girl one of my favourite activities was rummaging through my Nan’s button box. A couple of years ago, having remembered the fun I used to have, I decided that I should have a button box too – after all I already have step-ish grandchildren. I am crap though, and this is as far as I have got with my collection – am thinking that as my Nan was in her 60s when I used to play with hers, I have 20 years to accumulate many more.

What are the small things you treasure? Me and Keynko would love to know, and you can link up below!

You can’t beat a button tin for hours of pleasure. I can still get lost in one now!

The baby shoes are utterly adorable and I’m now feeling very bad I didn’t keep Ruby’s ๐Ÿ™

Love the contrast between the sizes of the shoes. Makes you realise how much they grow.

Ooooh – the matchbox challenge takes me right back! We did that at school in Y1 and I was off with Chicken Pox at the time so I remember my class teacher hoping round with an empty matchbox for me and instructions. I became obsessed with finding small things that week!

This has taken me right back to happy hours spent with my grandma’s button tin – I need to start one of my own, officially for the kids but really for me ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ve never heard of that matchbox challenge before but it’s brilliant, my eldest would love it.

Oh the difference in those shoes says so much. Have kept my sons’ ones too. They’ won’t be 18 for a while and the memories are already fading. What a lovely choice for this week – ‘Small.’ ๐Ÿ™‚
